Cosmic rays conctantly tranform athmosferic nitrogen into new atom of radiocarbon (C-14).

Since the work of Van Helmont we know that the carbon in trees comes primarily from the atmodphere.  That includes a constant proporton of radiocarbon, which stars decaying when the tree dies, so new wood is more radiactivr than old wood.
