     NUMERICANA
The first 10 years...

    Caricature of Gerard Michon
 by Jochen Wilke (2010)
for the 10-year anniversary of Numericana.com

Below is an archived copy of the homy little guest book that was online for 10 years, while Numericana existed only as a Personal Web Page (PWP) hosted by AT&T Worldnet (discontinued on March 31, 2010).  On the average, this guest book recorded less than one comment per month but there was a dark period  (of several months)  when it was fending off as many as 60 nefarious spam messages per day!  To handle this, visitors were eventually presented only with a frozen copy that was updated manually whenever a legitimate entry came in.

PWP @ att.net The Numericana.com domain was secured on March 19, 2000 and went immediately online by being forwarded to an AT&T address  (home.att.net/~numericana).  In hindsight, this was a poor setup since many people ended up posting the target address, against all recommendations.  10 years down the line, this would cause about 1200 broken links  (a fraction of those are now corrected).  The guest book itself was opened in the first week of Numericana's existence  (see earliest entry below).

This website is a source of enormous entertainment for the math enthusiast. Articles like the ones featured on this website (including the ones featured on this website, in fact) remind me of why I choose to study mathematics: the subtle beauty of patterns, the depth of the field, and, of course, the unique pleasure one gets when they solve a fascinating problem.

If anyone needs a 'soundbite' regarding the scholarship that underlies Numericana they need look no further than the Dec. 2009 issue of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society (www.ams.org/notices), where the curious but important story is told of Legendre's lost portrait.

The rigors of mathemtics and its many puzzles help me keep my 80 year old mind active and my curiousity alive. I recently wrote to Gérard about an article he wrote where I thought (foolishly) that I had detected a flaw in one of his explanations. He very kindly corrected me and encouraaged me. I have gone way beyond my intellectual depth in my ameteur math studies, but I keep going back for further punishments. I am currently trying to understand the "pigeon hole" theory among others. I think I have it. On the whole, however, it is pure number theory which attracts me. Gérard's contributions are invaluable to me. Guitry

I am greatly impressed by the quick and accurate answer to my question given by Dr. Michon. This has saved me hours of searching books and internet. The generalization of my question, given by Dr.Michon genetares problems and a general way of their solution in the same range, that enabled me to deeper understanding of the material. Thank you for all the effort and for creating such a great site!

Very nice site.

I found a problem posted here in 2002 (at www.numericana.com/answer/algebra.htm#quartic) which calls for the solution of an algebraic equation of degree 4...

In the 1980's, I had seen that same problem in the French monthly magazine "Science & Vie". It staged a smart painter trying to figure out, with pencil and paper, the exact width of a corridor where two opposing ladders of known lengths cross at a height of one meter...

The question was: Even if the scene takes place on the top floor of a high-rise building under construction (no lift) wouldn't it be wiser for the painter to fetch the tape measure he left in his van downstairs?

I have discovered this site only a few days ago (better late than never). For me, it is a life saver. I use math as a kind of aspirine - whenever I have a headache or blues or something, I do some math and it dwindles away. So discovering Dr.Michon's side is like finding a whole pharmacy where they give stuff out for free.
Were there more sites like numericana.com, the world would be a better place.

[Reply to yesterday's comment by Mort Klein, as posted below]

Some people have reported problems using www.numericana.com (and subdirectories) instead of the current "direct" address http://home.att.net/~numericana (and subdirectories) especially from behind the firewalls of some educational institutions... However, I still recommend bookmarking and/or linking to www.numericana.com which is intended to be the "permanent" address of this site. Please, let me know (by e-mail) if the problems persist (and, if so, under what conditions they occur).

Thanks for the kind words, Mort.

You are indeed a wizard! I'm amazed that you have such data at your fingertips. Your calculation of the weight has explained why I need to be very careful lifting and carrying these 5-gallon buckets of used oil around the boat and on the dock.

Part of the problem with this used oil is that we tend to carry them awkwardly to avoid ruining clothing with drips and spatters, so backs and shoulders are at risk.

I'll be checking back for other helpful numerical facts!

I have just heard about your site, and it is a nice idea to make Math more attractive like that.
We just found the answer to one of my kids' recent question: what is the definition of a meter. And were proud to see that the kg is in Paris.

Dear Dr. Michon,

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the article about the perimeter of an ellipse. Your mastery of English matches
your mastery of math and the wealth of detail you include makes it a real pleasure.

Kind Regards

Dear Dr. Michon,

I would like to thank you for this totally excellent website!

What can I say? Well, I have never been compelled to m@il anybody at ANY website EVER, and I may sound like an idiot, but Numericana is AMAZING.

I have found this site to be the most humorous, informative, wondrous, (and I would be lying if I didn't say mind-boggling), that I have come across.

I just kinda surfed in by accident, but that was two and a half hours ago! I shall definitely be a regular visitor!

I do not expect a reply, but I am so impressed, that I had to thank you for the time and effort you have put into the contents of your site, and to tell you it is much appreciated.

Congratulations on producing such an interesting website, and thanks for increasing my limited knowledge!

Waz.

Dear Dr. Michon,

I am a recent convert to mathematics. After having spent most of my life absolutely miserable at math, I was converted by the books on recreational math, and magic, of Martin Gardner and Harry Lorayne.

Since then, I have become a math (really basic arithmetic) evangelist, and have developed websites and booklets for that end.

Big deal. Today I ran across your website, and was BLOWN AWAY! It is amazing. I'm sure I will spend many hours playing there. It is another impetus for me to go back to school and get a math degree. I am 46.

Thanks for the inspiration! Keep up the great work!

Yours truly,

Brian Foley

I just read your answer to a question concerning the area between two curves on the Ask Jeeves site. I was very impressed with your concise treatise and solution on the problem. I can only wish that some day my mathematical prowess can even remotely compare to yours.

Thanks.

Wonderful website.

I stumbled across your website -- and as a college educator, I love it and will use it (with credit given) from time to time in studying and teaching ancient units of measure.

Just one more question for your list:

Q: "You load 16 tons, what do you get?"

A: "Another day older, and deeper in debt."

Now I suppose the unit "day" needs further examination.

Thank you for the valuable resource.

Wow! I just realized that, in about 3 hours, this Guest Book will be exactly one year old and nobody but myself has ever signed it... The "Final Answers" section premiered in October 2000 and has been growing in popularity (it now contains about 120 articles, which some people have found helpful). However, this has not prompted anybody to post a comment about it here. I won't beg for it, but the first person to drop a line in this Book will certainly make my day :) Happy Birthday, dear Guest Book...
